Insula Capraee so named because from a distance its outline brings to mind a goat. The Greeks called it Kapros ( wild-boar ) . Geologically speaking the island was anexstension of Sorrento . Slightly wider than ten square kilometres . The island is divided betewen two townships Capri and Anacapri .The Greek prefix " Ana " indicates in fact its greater height . One of the first wel konw lovers of the island was the empror Augustus who arrived in 29 B.C. After him the emperor Tiberius found the island replete with roadsand building and he made these in to miniature personal kingdom betewen 27 A.D. and 37A.D. He built 12 villas and set up his imperial residence in the one dedicated to Jove " Villa Jovis For centuries many iminent people have lived on or visited Capri. Kings,Queens,Actors,Singers, Writers .Rich and famous have been part of the magical atmosphere of the place and the genuine friendship of the islanders . One of these was Axel Munthe the famous Swedish physician and writer he built Villa San Michele In Anacapri. Also to live on the island in 1900 was the German steel magnate A.F.Krupp who built the famous Via Krupp . The road starts from Giardini di Augusto with characteristically zig- zags its way to Marina Piccola . As well as the writer Curzio Malaparte and he built Villa Malaparte placed at Punta Massullo from he can see the rock of "Monacone " and the " Faraglioni " .The English singer Gracie Field , and she built for a villa " La Canzone del Mare" by the sea on the bay of Marina Piccola. Some political refugeses including Maxim Gorki and Lenin ,the famous chilean poet Pablo Neruda and many others lived on the island for several years . While often reality is less extraordinary than imagnation. We cannot say this regarding Capri. Positioned at the mouth of the gulf of naples and facing the breadth of the Tyrrhenian sea , the island features innumerable sea caverns . Perhaps the most famous is the " Blu' Grotto " ( Grotta Azzurra ) . Many other breathtaking sights surrond the island , the " Faraglioni " the " Arco Naturale " the unspoiled beauty of " Monte Solaro giving from the top an incredibly fantastic view of Capri it self and the gulf of Naples . Another memorable spot is the famous " Piazzetta " . The meeting point of the island's , writers, well know actors,,politicians, stylist and a good part of international Jet set. Last but not least is the local cusine . An incredibly satisfying blend of natural flavours translated by the locals in to fine food . In many ways Capri has been left unchanged through the years , so maybe you wont find the kind of friendly fisher- man or farmer welcoming you to the island .
